Acne
What causes acne?
Acne often first emerges during puberty as sex hormones (androgens) increase, causing sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Normally, the oil travels through the hair follicles to the skin surface. However, dead skin cells can block the follicles, blocking the oil on its way to the skin surface. When follicles become plugged, bacteria grow inside the follicles, causing inflammation and pimples.
Other causes of acne can include:
Hormonal changes (menses, pregnancy, birth control)
Medications
Oils from the scalp
Oils from external sources (cosmetics, cooking oil)
Diet
